The Hohe Kasten offers a partly demanding but varied possibility to the existing flight sport offer in the Appenzellerland. The take-off sites and wind conditions are more difficult than on Ebenalp. But with the right choice of flight, weather and wind conditions, and taking into account one's own flying skills, the Hohe Kasten is also available for a flying experience of a special kind. The time of take-off should be chosen carefully. If you are planning a flight into the Rhine Valley, you should get up relatively early and take off early because of the easterly takeoff direction. But beware: Those flying here should be prepared for a long and awkward return journey to Brülisau. For the flight into the foothills of the Alps, it is also advisable not to take off too late, as the wind can quickly become too strong for takeoff due to the jet effect created by the updrafts at the takeoff sites in the Kamor saddle. If you are too late and the wind is already strong at the upper launch sites, your only option is to descend to the lower launch site. Or you can simply sit out the time and enjoy the landscape with a magnificent view until the wonderful evening thermals set in.
